On March 2, our members gathered to watch, cheer on, and enjoy the La Liga soccer game. Real Madrid and Barcelona played towards getting one step closer to the Spain Cup. Our members celebrated with drinks, pizza, and good company! In the end the game went to Barcelona with a score of 1-0.
When asked why they come to the Unión Española to watch the game instead of sitting at home. One of our members said, “to watch the game with friends is much more enjoyable, especially when its in a place that is established for our culture. Being at the Unión makes us feel closer to home, like we’re really there in Spain at a bar cheering on our favorite teams.”
At the members only bar, the walls are decorated with soccer teams from when the Unión had our own soccer team. Many years ago, in the name of soccer and sportsmanship, social clubs in the Bay Area used to put together soccer teams to play against each other for a championship. We no longer hold a team, but looking at the framed photos on our wall displays our history and the culture and fun the Unión puts on for our members.

El 2 de marzo, nuestros miembros se reunieron para ver, animar y disfrutar del partido de fútbol de La Liga. El Real Madrid y el Barcelona jugaron para acercarse un paso más a la Copa de España. ¡Nuestros miembros celebraron con bebidas, pizza y buena compañía! Al final, el juego fue a Barcelona con un marcador de 1-0.
Cuando se les pregunta por qué acuden a Unión Española para ver el partido en lugar de quedarse en casa. Uno de nuestros miembros dijo: “ver el juego con amigos es mucho más agradable, especialmente cuando se encuentra en un lugar establecido para nuestra cultura. Estar en la Unión nos hace sentir más cerca de casa, como si estuviéramos realmente en España animando a nuestros equipos favoritos.”
En el bar solo para miembros, las paredes están decoradas con equipos de fútbol de cuando la Unión tenía nuestro propio equipo de fútbol. Hace muchos años, en nombre del fútbol y la deportividad, los clubes sociales en el Área de la Bahía solían juntar a los equipos de fútbol para competir entre sí por un campeonato. Ya no tenemos un equipo, pero al mirar las fotos enmarcadas en nuestra pared se muestra nuestra historia y la cultura y la diversión que la Unión ofrece a nuestros miembros.
